WORLD COPD DAY

Project Objective:
To commemorate the World COPD day, an event was organized by The Union South -East
Asia (USEA), New Delhi at hotel The Lalit on 25 th Nov 2021 from 10.00 – 2.00PM. The event
was graced by Shri. Vikas Sheel, Additional Secretary & MD (NHM), Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare (MoHFW), New Delhi, and Co-chaired by Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director –
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and Dr. Sunil Kumar, Director General
Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The event had approx. 116
participants in person and more than 1200 participants joining virtually. The event also
witnessed distinguished speakers from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Directorate
Health Services, MoHFW; National NCD cell and eminent experts of lung health across the
country. Overall, participants comprised of personnel from national and state health
departments, several respiratory health experts, representatives of medical public health
institutions, civil society organizations and some NGO representatives having experience in
these areas.

Following the opening remarks by the dignitaries, a guideline to strengthen the National
Program for prevention and control of CVD, diabetes, cancers and stroke intervention, was
launched. The guideline is a Medical officer manual for prevention and management of
chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and Asthma, to support the states in putting in
place the necessary elements, i.e., human resources, drugs, equipment and diagnostics
required at various health care levels for delivering the continuum of care for COPD and
Asthma. It is to also help in easy understanding and improving the decision making capacity

of Medical Officer for early diagnosis and management of COPD and Asthma at primary
health care level. The guidelines also would aid in improving the skills of the health care
staff at Sub Health Centre, e.g., Community Health Officer (CHO), ANM, ASHA in screening
and referring of suspected cases of COPD and Asthma.
